Milestone Academy Covid-19 Update – from Monday 23rd March 2020

Dear Parent and Carers

Following on from the letter that I sent out last Tuesday 17th March and Neil Willis’ letters of the 16th and 20th March, I now wish to update you with regard to Milestone Academy’s operational plan from Monday 23rd March 2020.

In doing so, I wish to draw your attention to the fact that the Government has issued further guidance in the early hours of this morning regarding the closure of educational settings.

At this time of national crisis, we at Milestone patently want to contribute to the national effort in combating the effects of Covid-19.  However, for everyone’s health and wellbeing (pupils, families and staff), we want to do so in a manner that is safe, realistic, manageable and deliverable. This is especially with regard to the new advice from the Government today:

  • Special schools, colleges and local authorities are advised to make case by case basis assessments of the health and safeguarding considerations of pupils and students on an education, health and care (EHC) plan. For some, they will be safer in an education provision. For others, they will be safer at home.’’
  • ‘’Every child who can be safely cared for at home should be”.

Thus, I am now trying to clarify two unknowns:  the staff who are currently well enough / able to act as volunteers to work from Monday 23rd March, and the parents / carers of Milestone pupils who wish their children to attend from next week.  The next step then would be the matching of both of these groups to ensure the service that Milestone delivers is then safe, realistic, manageable and deliverable. I would like to add the word sustainable however each day could see staff unfortunately fall ill or having to self-isolate with their families

With all of this in mind, I have concluded that I must now close Milestone Academy and all satellite sites for one day on Monday 23rd March to allow myself and my team to assess all this information from colleagues and parents/carers. To aid this decision-making process I would ask you to follow this link (click here) and respond to the questions asked by 9am Monday 23rd March.  I will then contact families during Monday 23rd March with regard to the future offer we can put in place from Tuesday 24th March onwards.

I realise these are uniquely difficult times for families and pupils, and I am sure you will understand it is the same for our staff.  I thus ask for your understanding with regard to our closure on Monday and the subsequent plans we formulate.

Yours faithfully

Nigel Jones

Principal
