Year 7 Catch Up Premium 2013-14

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium provides schools with an additional £500 for each year 7 pupil who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or maths at the end of key stage 2.

No Year 7 pupils at Milestone Academy achieved Level 4 or above in reading and/or maths at the end of Key Stage 2 due to their significant learning needs.

There are 13 Year 7 pupils currently (2013-14). We have received £6500 to support literacy and numeracy for this group.

Analysis of their progress at the end of Year 6 has identified a need to focus on the Maths strands of Shape, Space and Measure and Using and Applying.

The budget is being spent in the following way:

Identified Need: Strengthen the Teaching and Learning of  Shape, Space and Measure for Year 7s

Action: Cross curricular maths week to focus on Shape, Space and Measure which all year 7 pupils will attend. Maths Leader to train Teachers in how to differentiate the language component of this strand to better meet the needs of Year 7 pupils. Purchase of specialist equipment for teaching of this strand to pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties.

Cost: £2400.

Expected impact: To raise attainment in Shape, Space and Measure for Year 7 pupils and ensure they meet or exceed end of year targets.

Impact achieved July 2014:

This very popular and highly effective cross-curricular Shape, Space and Measure and Arts week took place in Term 6. The progress measured by teachers in all classes for Shape, Space and Measure saw an increase across all ages and need-types and percentages on track to exceed end of key Stage targets rose from 76% in Term 5 to 85% in Term 6; an increase of 9%. All last year’s Yr 7’s are on track to make above expected end of Key Stage progress in S,S&M other than two pupils with PMLD who have very specific medical needs.

The Maths Leader met with small groups and individuals to support with this. Pupils are now performing as well or better in Shape, Space and Measure than other strands of maths across the whole school including last year’s Yr 7 pupils other than for two pupils with PMLD who have very specific medical needs.

Specialist equipment purchased supported our learners with profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties to make better progress in Shape, Space and Measure. The two pupils with PMLD who were in Year 7 last year have not made expected progress but this is due to their very specific medical needs.

Identified Need: Strengthen the teaching of Using and Applying for Year 7s

Action: Purchase of software and subsequent training to develop Using and Applying for Year 7s. Purchase of 13 x iPad minis for personalised learning support.

Cost: £3047.

Expected impact: To raise attainment in Using and Applying for Year 7 pupils and ensure they meet or exceed end of year targets.

Impact achieved July 2014: There was a delay in the purchase of the software and iPads so the impact cannot yet be measured. All hardware and software has now been purchased so the impact will be measured during the academic year 2014-15. The large majority of last year’s Yr 7’s are expected to reach above expected end of Key Stage targets in U&A.

Identified Need: Strengthen the teaching and learning of Maths for Year 7s

Action: Appoint a Maths Lead TA to support the Maths Leader with resources, admin and delivering training for TAs.

Cost: £1000.

Expected impact: Enable Maths Leader to focus more effectively on Teaching and Learning of Maths.

Impact achieved July 2014: This post had not been appointed to during 2013-14 and the impact will need to be measured during the academic year 2014-15 following the successful appointment at the beginning of the academic year. Despite this the large majority of last year’s Yr 7 pupils are on track to make above expected end of Key Stage targets in Maths.
