In 2008, the Bercow Review made recommendations to the government about how to improve services for children with speech, language and communication needs.  The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the charity I CAN have collaborated to conduct a follow-up review of services 10 years after the initial report was published.

The report shows poor understanding of and insufficient resourcing for speech, language and communication needs. This means too many children and young people receive inadequate, ineffective and inequitable support, potentially impacting on their educational outcomes, their employability and their mental health.

Bercow: Ten Years On makes strong recommendations to Government and system leaders about what must change to improve the situation with a focus on solutions, and presents examples of effective practice.

We are very fortunate here at Milestone Academy in terms of our provision and the work we do as a school to support children’s speech, language and communication needs as has been recently verified by the Balanced System:  Scheme for Schools in our Centre of Excellence Award.

I am aware from our work and discussions that supporting children’s speech, language and communication needs is something that we all feel strongly about.  I would like therefore to encourage you to show your support on behalf of all the children and young people that we work with to sign the petition which is calling on the government to implement the recommendations in the report and improve the services for children with SLCN.

At 10,000 signatures the government will respond to the petition and at 100,000 signatures, the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

Thank you for your support.
