Post-16

Back to Curriculum by Phase

Our intention is that Milestone Academy Sixth Form prepares students for future success in their next step of education, employment or social care provision.

It consistently and extensively promotes learners’ personal development, ensuring that learners have access to a wide-ranging, rich set of experiences.

Students have the opportunity to build sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and destinations and gain qualifications or meet the standards that allow them to go on to destinations that meet their interests, aspirations and intended course of study.

Students develop an optimum level of independence or interdependence to support a fulfilled future.

The curriculum and qualifications remain ambitious and are tailored to meet individual needs. It ensures that all learners are given the same opportunities to access appropriate and relevant education to develop new skills and improve their life outcomes.

Post-16 students access all four learning pathways; Brook, Stream, River and Waterfall. This allows for each student to access a curriculum which meets their holistic learning, therapeutic and medical needs and ensures appropriate support and challenge.

Where appropriate, pupils will transition to our distinct Post-16 satellite provision at Milestone at Wilmington.

The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future destinations.

The bespoke accreditation/ qualification offer is adapted via pathway and sequenced to allow pupils to progress though the pathway offer and from (working towards) Entry Level 1 up to Level 2 (GCSE equivalent).

Students access a carefully planned Independent Living Skill Curriculum informed by the key areas of ASDAN Life Skills Challenges preparation for adulthood pathway.

Business Enterprise pathways provide all pupils with appropriate and meaningful work experience within a familiar and supportive environment and opportunities to generalise learnt skills through functional experiences while working towards an ASDAN accreditation and ASDAN Life Skills Challenges.

A comprehensive careers program and unbiased information to all, about potential next steps; high-quality, up-to-date and locally relevant careers guidance; and opportunities for good-quality, meaningful encounters with the world of work.

A rich co-curricular offer which provides opportunities to generalise and further develop skills in appropriate and real life contexts.

Students develop an age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships through appropriate relationship and sex education.

Students develop detailed knowledge across the curriculum and, as a result, achieve well in their study programmes.

Students make substantial and sustained progress from their identified and recorded starting points in their study programmes. Where appropriate, this is reflected in results in national examinations that meet government expectations, or in the qualifications obtained.

The personalised nature of the curriculum allows all students to engage and make progress.

Students achieve an optimum level of independence or interdependence relevant to their needs and aspirations.

Positive progress is measured and evidenced using Brook, and M Level frameworks and achievement of provision plan targets.

Evidence of learning can be triangulated through exploring online learning journals, individual learning plan recording, learning journals and accreditation portfolios.

All young people will depart Milestone Academy with Short Course and/or Life Skill Challenge certification which reflects achievement within their programme of study.

All young people will depart Milestone Academy with an accreditation or examination outcome relevant to their level of learning and personal interests in preparation to transition to Post-19 education, employment or social care provision.

All students are supported to transition to appropriate further education or social care provision.
